Apply to Teacher Certification Program at SCE

Applying to the Teacher Certification Program (TCP) or to the combined TCP-M.Ed. in Urban Teaching

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Admission Requirements:

  • A bachelor’s degree with a 3.0 gpa from an accredited college or university. (Qualified students may apply for special permission to enter TCP as they simultaneously complete their undergraduate programs.) Students with a grade point average below 3.0 but above 2.75 may be admissible with the submission of acceptable scores on one of the following exams: PRAXIS Core, ACT, SAT, or GRE.  For acceptable test scores, consult the program coordinator.
  • A major or a minimum of 30 undergraduate credits in one of the following content areas: Biology, Chemistry, English, French, Italian, Mathematics, Physics, Social Studies/History, and Spanish. The TCP Coordinator will work with applicants who do not have 30 credits or credit distribution may not match our approved program to identify needed content courses. Students who concurrently enroll in a bachelor’s program must complete all content courses required for certification before enrolling in TCP classes, with the exception of EDU 201, Educational Psychology, and EDU 207, Principles of Secondary Education.
  • Two letters of recommendation attesting to the applicant’s potential for a career in teaching.
  • Personal interview with the TCP coordinator.

Steps to Apply

You may apply and enroll for the fall, spring or summer terms. Our application process is simple. You’ll need to submit:

  • Your application (visit our Guide to Applying and Getting Started)
  • Official transcripts from all previous colleges/universities- submitted to the SCE Office. Candidates are required to have a minimum 3.0 GPA. (Please see the coordinator if you would like to discuss options regarding GPA.) 
  • Two (2) letters of recommendation  (on official letterhead)- submitted to the SCE Office
  • Two required essays:  Please type (double-spaced) your response to the following questions. Your answers will be included in your portfolio of work once you are admitted into the TCP.
    1. ​Summarize your undergraduate or graduate preparation in the content area in which you plan to teach. Include evidence of past coursework and any career and/or life experiences in that discipline. Describe your familiarity with the standards in the content area.  Secondly, describe your personal goals for continued growth in this discipline.
    2. Describe your experiences working with children (volunteer, teaching, parenting, etc.). Explain why you have chosen to become a teacher and what you hope to accomplish in the field of education.

To apply to a bachelor’s degree program and the TCP at the same time, applicants must:

  • Have completed 30 undergraduate credits at a regionally accredited college or university;
  • Submit official results for the PRAXIS Core, ACT or SAT.  For acceptable test scores, consult the program coordinator;
  • Follow all other TCP application instructions above.
