FriarServe | Providence College

Friarserve- a service initiative that pairs Providence College volunteers with 5 Providence Catholic pre-k-8 schools

MAKE A DIFFERENCE WITH FRIARSERVE

FriarServe is a new service initiative that pairs Providence College volunteers with five Providence Catholic Pre-K – 8 schools. This service component is a companion to PC’s centennial gift of $100,000 to Catholic schools in the Diocese of Providence. The monetary gift, which will be paid over four years, will be used to provide scholarships to diocesan K-12 schools.

WHO CAN VOLUNTEER?

Students, faculty, staff, and administrators at Providence College.

WHEN CAN I VOLUNTEER?

Volunteer opportunities will be available from October through May for the next four years.

WHERE ARE THE SCHOOLS LOCATED?

All schools are in Providence, and with the exception of Bishop McVinney, which is in lower South Providence, all are within three miles of campus. Two schools (St. Pius V and St. Augustine) are within walking distance.

WHAT IS THE TIME COMMITMENT?

That varies depending on the availability of the volunteer and the needs of the schools. Service hours can be one-time, weekly, monthly, or any other arrangement that works for the schools and volunteers.

WHAT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES ARE AVAILABLE?

Some examples include reading during reading week, service days, tutoring, mentoring, assistance with school athletic teams, assistance with after-school clubs and activities, or assisting at a school event.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The Office of Public Affairs and Community Relations will work with the Diocese of Providence Catholic School Office to identify volunteer opportunities within diocesan schools and match them with PC students, faculty, and staff who are able to volunteer.

IS A BACKGROUND CHECK NECESSARY?

Volunteers who want to tutor or who otherwise may be engaged with students on a one-to-one basis will need a background check. PC will cover the cost of background checks and assist with completing required paperwork.

WILL TRANSPORTATION BE PROVIDED?

Campus Transportation will give volunteers a ride to each school, should they require it.
